This peer-reviewed formative evaluation presents HarmonicThreads, a fabric-based digital musical instrument designed for inclusive music-making. The study tested the prototype with 20 adults, comparing independent play (direct note triggering via conductive threads) and assisted play (automated melodic accompaniment from sustained contact). Results show participants used the fabric surface with raised threads as tactile guides, forming spatial expectations and experimenting with chords and rhythm. Assisted play enabled immediate musical engagement, while independent play offered more perceived control. Barriers included unclear activation thresholds, perceived fragility, thin/spaced threads, posture issues, and ambiguous feedback.
